Progress in the use of alternatives to animal testing
According to ECHA's tri-annual report about the use of alternatives to animal testing, registrants have widely used alternative methods to generate information required by REACH to ensure the safe use of chemicals. Most registrants conform with the data sharing obligations and industry has increasingly used in vitro methods, built categories and predicted substance properties by read-across.

New rules on the renewal of biocidal product authorisations subject to mutual recognition
The aim is to avoid duplicating work and improve the consistency of the renewal of authorisation processes in the EU.

Chesar 2.3 supports SCED-based consumer assessment
ECHA's Chemical Safety Assessment and Reporting tool (Chesar) has been updated to include consumer exposure estimations based on Specific Consumer Exposure Determinants (SCEDs). SCEDs are sets of data developed by industry associations that registrants can use to estimate the exposure of consumers to a substance.

CLH consultation launched on the insecticide pirimicarb
ECHA has started a 45-day public commenting period on the harmonised classification and labelling (CLH) proposal for pirimicarb. This insecticide already has a harmonised classification, and the dossier submitter, the UK competent authority, is proposing changes to the current classification and additional classification for health and environmental hazards. Pirimicarb belongs to the class of dimethylcarbamate insecticides to control aphids. The deadline for submitting comments is the 21 July 2014.
