Etsi vaihtoehtoja
Kun aineet on priorisoitu ja osa niistä valittu korvattaviksi, niille on aika etsiä mahdollisia vaihtoehtoja. Korvaamishankkeen laajuuden määrittäminen on olennaisen tärkeää, sillä tässä vaiheessa määritetään
a) tavoiteltu osallistumisen taso sidosryhmille
b) hankkeen taustalla olevat tavoitteet ja periaatteet
c) vaihtoehdon valitsemisessa käytettävät valintaperusteet.
Korvaamishankkeen laajuuden määrittämiseen sisältyy myös arvioinnin rajaaminen. Tämä auttaa keskittämään resursseja ja laatimaan suunnitelman, jonka mukaisesti vaihtoehtoja arvioidaan. Voidaan esimerkiksi pohtia, mitä terveysvaikutuksia, altistusreittejä, elinkaaren vaiheita ja tekniseen toimintoon/suorituskykyyn liittyviä tekijöitä on otettava huomioon.
Ensinnä on pohdittava huolellisesti, tarvitaanko vaarallista ainetta edellyttävää toimintoa ylipäätään ja/tai voitaisiinko saman päämäärä saavuttaa eri tavoin. Onko esimerkiksi todella tarpeen tulostaa asiakkaille kuitti, joka voi sisältää vaarallisia musteen ainesosia, vai olisiko sähköinen kuitti sopiva vaihtoehto? Pohdittaessa turvallisempia vaihtoehtoja asiaa kannattaa tarkastella laajemmin esimerkiksi siltä kannalta, mitä vaihtoehtoisia aineita, tekniikoita, tuotemalleja ja organisatorisia tai menetelmällisiä mukautuksia voitaisiin käyttää.
