Be aware of false invitations - check that the lead registrant is credible
ECHA has received reports of companies falsely claiming to be lead registrants for certain substances. Potential registrants should, therefore, not accept invitations to prepare a joint registration from individual companies who are not following the rules of the REACH Regulation.

Restriction on cadmium in paints extended
The existing restriction on cadmium (EC 231-152-8; CAS 7440-43-9) and cadmium compounds in paints has been extended. The restriction was published in the EU's Official Journal on 16 February 2016.

Two new intentions to identify substances of very high concern
France intends to propose 4,4'-isopropylidenediphenol (bisphenol A; BPA) (EC 201-245-8; CAS 80-05-7) as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) by 8 August 2016. By the same date, the Netherlands also intends to propose benzene-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid 1,2-anhydride (trimellitic anhydride; TMA) (EC 209-008-0; CAS 552-30-7) as an SVHC.

Apply for approval of active substances used for treating articles by 1 September 2016
The deadline to apply for the approval of active substances which are used in treated articles and not yet in the approval process is 1 September 2016. Companies will need to submit a complete dossier on the active substance to ECHA through R4BP 3 by this date to continue to place a treated article on the EU market.

Public consultation on cyanamide and PHMB
ECHA has launched a public consultation on two substances as potential candidates for substitution:

PHMB (CAS 27083-27-8 and CAS 32289-58-0) used for the disinfection of drinking water for humans and animals in product-type 5
-
cyanamide (EC 206-992-3; CAS 420-04-2) used for veterinary hygiene in product-type 3 and as an insecticide in product-type 18.
The consultations are open until 21 April 2016.
