Maintenance on ECHA’s chemicals databases - downtime next week
A technical maintenance of the chemicals databases will start at the end of next week. This means that all searchable databases on REACH, CLP, biocides and PIC information (e.g. registered substances, C&L Inventory, the Candidate List) as well as substance infocards and brief profiles will not be available from Thursday 6 October afternoon to Monday 10 October inclusive. All submission tools will work as normal.

List of substances with lead registrants available
ECHA has published a list of substances for which a lead registrant has been declared in REACH-IT. It includes the names of those lead registrant companies who have given their permission to publish. You can check the list to see which substances are being registered.

Update to REACH 2018 statistics – nearly 7 000 registrations submitted for the last deadline
The statistics about the registrations for the May 2018 deadline have been updated. Nearly 7 000 registrations have been submitted for 3 510 substances. The top country in terms of the number of registrations is Germany.

Practical guides for SME managers and on how to use alternatives to animal testing available in 23 languages
The guides, first published in English in July 2016, are now available in 23 EU languages. The Practical guide for SME managers and REACH coordinators is targeted towards company managers and REACH coordinators who are responsible for gathering the information needed to compile REACH registration dossiers.
The guide on How to use alternatives to animal testing to fulfil your information requirements combines five practical guides on how to use alternative approaches and report data in the registration dossier. It helps you to better understand your obligations to avoid unnecessary testing on animals while still making sure that you have sufficient information on your substances for classification and risk assessment.

ECHA has published new infographics and a subsection on the website showing how REACH benefits human health, the environment and the economy. The pages show how a restriction on a substance such as lead can avoid damage to children’s brain development, keep the environment green and clean, and save money at the same time.

Poison Centres
Member States voted for harmonised information for poison centres
EU citizens will have better health protection in cases of accidental poisoning after the Member States voted in favour of a Commission proposal on harmonised information for poison centres. The vote is also good news for industry as it means that producers and importers of chemical mixtures will save approximately 550 million EUR annually.

Exchange Network on Exposure Scenarios (ENES) meets in November
The ENES10 meeting takes place from 15 to 16 November in Helsinki. The event marks five years of joint collaboration between ECHA, industry stakeholders and Member States in improving the safe use of chemicals in the supply chain. This collaboration has just been evaluated and the ENES10 meeting will focus - along with its normal business - on the key findings and recommendations. The meeting seeks a common understanding and way forward that ensures the tools and methods developed within this programme will be implemented by industry.

Guidance
New drafts for REACH guidance updates available
The following new drafts for updated ECHA guidance on REACH have been sent for the next consultation step:
- Guidance on registration (draft for Version 3.0) sent for CARACAL consultation.
- Guidance for identification and naming of substances under REACH and CLP, new Appendix on Substance Identity Profile only (draft for Version 2.0) sent for Forum, MSC and RAC consultation.
Copies of the new drafts have been uploaded to the ongoing guidance consultations page on the ECHA website.
Potential registrants for the 2018 deadline may be interested in already viewing the new draft documents.
