Intentionally added microplastics likely to accumulate in terrestrial and freshwater environments

In addition to polluting marine environments, which has been widely discussed, concerns raised by intentionally added microplastics may be more relevant for the terrestrial environment and freshwater.

Submit your substance in articles notification

The deadline for submitting substance in articles notifications for 10 substances of very high concern added to the Candidate List in June 2018 is 27 December 2018:

  • Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) (EC 209-136-7). This substance may be found in flooring, furniture, toys, construction materials, curtains, footwear, leather products and electronic equipment, and in products with paper-based material (e.g. tissues, feminine hygiene products, nappies, books, magazines, wallpaper).
  • Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) (EC 208-764-9). This substance may be found in tyres, treated wooden products, treated textile and fabric, and brake pads in trucks or cars.
  • Dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6) (EC 208-762-8). This substance may be found in articles produced from polysiloxane polymers and resins (used, for example, in construction, aerospace and automotive sectors).
  • Ethylenediamine (EC 203-468-6). This substance may be found in adhesives and sealants, coating products, fillers, putties, plasters, and modelling clay.
  • Terphenyl hydrogenated (EC 262-967-7). This substance may be found in coatings and inks, adhesives and sealants, and plastic articles.
  • Lead (EC 231-100-4). This substance may be found in batteries, lead sheets, hot-dip galvanised steel, lead solder, lead ammunition (non-military), cable sheathing and metal articles.
  • Disodium octaborate (EC 234-541-0). This substance may be found in frits, cellulose insulation, and construction materials, flux mixtures and refractory mixtures (including stone, plaster, cement, glass and ceramic articles, and wood articles).
  • Benzo[ghi]perylene (EC 205-883-8). This substance is not registered under REACH. It may be found in vulcanising agents, adhesives, binding agents and conductive agents.
  • Benzene-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid 1,2 anhydride (trimellitic anhydride) (TMA) (EC 209-008-0).
  • Dicyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP) (EC 201-545-9). This substance may be found in plastisol, PVC, rubber and plastic articles.

New substance evaluation conclusions published

New substance evaluation conclusion documents are now available on ECHA’s website for:

  • dipotassium tetraborate (EC 215-575-5; CAS 1332-77-0), added to the CoRAP list in 2017 and evaluated by Lithuania;
  • N,N-dicyclohexylbenzothiazole-2-sulphenamide (EC 225-625-8; CAS 4979-32-2), added to the CoRAP list in 2013 and evaluated by Germany;
  • trade name: Wasserige Loesung des MV31-Kaliumsalz (EC 444-340-1; CAS -), added to the CoRAP list in 2017 and evaluated by Germany.

Public consultation on harmonised classification and labelling

ECHA is looking for comments on the harmonised classification and labelling proposals for the following substances:
  • Citric acid (EC 201-069-1; CAS 77-92-9). It has no existing harmonised classification and labelling in Annex VI to CLP. Comments are invited on selected physical hazard properties as well as on health and environmental hazards except aspiration hazard and hazardous to the ozone layer hazard classes.
  • Clomazone (ISO); 2-(2-chlorobenzyl)-4,4-dimethyl-1,2-oxazolidin-3-one (EC -; CAS 81777-89-1). It has no existing harmonised classification and labelling in Annex VI to CLP. Comments are invited on selected physical hazards as well as all human health and environmental hazard classes except hazardous to the ozone layer. Please note that for this substance a parallel consultation on the Renewal Assessment Report (RAR) is being currently run by EFSA.
The deadline for comments is 8 February 2019.

There is now more information available for biocidal products and active substances in ECHA’s public database. You can search with a product’s trade name to find out where in the EU or EEA it is authorised, what its main ingredients are and how to use it safely. You can also compare products to find more environmentally friendly options.

Report on information exchange under PIC

The report on the exchange of information about chemicals exported under the Prior Informed Consent (PIC) Regulation in 2016 and 2017 is now available on our website. It includes, for example, the number of export notifications submitted for each chemical.
