National Inspectorates - Iceland

The Environment Agency of Iceland is responsible for the implementation and enforcement of REACH, CLP, BPR and POP Regulations as well as other regulations implemented under the Icelandic Chemicals Act. Several authorities have roles under the Chemicals Act but the Environment Agency acts as the overall coordinator for enforcement.

Companies holding an operating permit issued by a local health authority are inspected by the authority in question regarding the handling and labelling of chemicals.

Authorities responsible for REACH enforcement

  • The Administration of Occupational Safety and Health – responsible for enforcement of OSH related duties.
  • The Environment Agency – responsible for the enforcement of all other duties.

Authorities responsible for CLP enforcement

  • In companies that hold an operating permit issued by a local health authority, said authority is responsible for inspecting the handling and labelling of chemicals.
  • The Consumer Agency – responsible for enforcement of provisions related to advertising.
  • The Environment Agency – responsible for the enforcement of all other duties.

  • The Consumer Agency – responsible for enforcement of provisions related to advertising.
  • The Environment Agency – responsible for the enforcement of all other duties.

Authorities responsible for POP enforcement

  • The Environment Agency – responsible for the enforcement of all duties.

Authorities responsible for PIC enforcement

The PIC Regulation is not implemented in Iceland. However, the Environment Agency is responsible for handling matters related to PIC.
