Highlights from October BPC meeting

The Biocidal Products Committee proposes not to approve the use of d-allethrin in insecticides. It also adopted a record number of Union authorisation opinions.

Helsinki, 19 October 2021 - ECHA’s Biocidal Products Committee (BPC) concluded in its opinion that d-allethrin should not be approved for product-type 18 (insecticides, acaricides and products to control other arthropods). The committee considered that the toxicological test data presented in the dossier submitted does not sufficiently match the profile of d-allethrin currently placed on the market. The committee also identified unacceptable risks to human health and the environment from the use of the substance.

The committee adopted a positive opinion approving the active substance BIT for product-types 6 (preservatives for products in storage) and 13 (working or cutting fluid preservatives).
The committee also adopted positives opinions for nine applications for Union authorisation for:

  • L(+) lactic acid for product-type 2 (disinfectants and algaecides not intended for use directly on people or animals);
  • active chlorine released from sodium hypochlorite for product-types 2, 3 (veterinary hygiene), 4 (food and feed area) and 5 (drinking water) and release from calcium hypochlorite (for product-types 2, 4 and 5);
  • propan-1-ol and propan-2-ol (for various product types);
  • hydrogen peroxide for product-types 2, 3 and 4; and
  • cyromazine for product-type 18.

The European Commission together with the EU Member States will take the final decision on approval of active substances and on Union authorisation of biocidal product families.

The committee met on 5-14 October 2021. The opinions will be available on the BPC's web page in the near future. The next meeting will take place in late November – early December 2021.
