Búsqueda de alternativas
Una vez que haya establecido las prioridades entre las sustancias químicas que utiliza y haya seleccionado algunas para la sustitución, es el momento de examinar posibles alternativas. Resulta fundamental definir el alcance del proyecto de sustitución, dado que esta es la etapa en la que usted determina:
a) el nivel de implicación de las partes interesadas que se propone conseguir;
b) los objetivos y principios subyacentes al proyecto, y
c) los criterios para decidir qué alternativa elegir.
Definir el alcance del proyecto de sustitución implica también establecer los límites de la evaluación, lo cual ayuda a concentrar los recursos y a esbozar un plan para evaluar alternativas que incluirá la planificación de los efectos sanitarios, las vías de exposición, los segmentos del ciclo de vida y los atributos de la funcionalidad o el rendimiento técnico que deben tenerse en cuenta.
Como primer paso, deberá considerar detenidamente si la función técnica que proporciona la sustancia peligrosa es realmente necesaria o si existen otras vías para alcanzar el mismo objetivo. Por ejemplo, ¿necesita realmente facilitar a sus clientes un recibo impreso con una tinta que podría contener componentes peligrosos, o podría ser un recibo electrónico una alternativa adecuada? Cuando piense en posibles alternativas más seguras, analice de un modo más amplio las opciones de que dispone, como las adaptaciones organizativas o metodológicas que podría aplicar a las sustancias, las técnicas y los diseños de productos.
