Når du har prioriteret dine stoffer og udvalgt nogle af dem som kandidater til substitution, er det tid til at kigge efter mulige alternativer. Det er vigtigt at fastsætte omfanget af substitutionsprojektet, da det er på dette trin, at du bestemmer:
a) i hvor høj grad du vil inddrage interessenterne
b) hvilke mål og principper der ligger til grund for projektet, og
c) kriterierne for, hvilket alternativ du skal vælge.
Afgrænsningen af omfanget af substitutionsprojektet indebærer også at afgrænse omfanget af vurderingen. Dette vil hjælpe med at fokusere ressourcerne og skitsere en plan for vurderingen af alternativer, herunder at planlægge, hvilke sundhedsmæssige virkninger, eksponeringsveje, livscyklussegmenter og teknisk funktion/ydeevne, der skal tages med i overvejelserne.
Det første skridt er nøje at overveje, om der er reelt behov for den tekniske funktion, som det problematiske stof yder, og/eller om der er andre måder at nå samme mål på. Er det f.eks. nødvendigt at give dine kunder en fysisk kvittering, som kan indeholde farlige fremkaldere til blæk, eller ville en elektronisk kvittering være et egnet alternativ? Når du overvejer mulige sikrere alternativer, så se mere bredt på dine muligheder såsom hvilke stoffer, teknikker og produktdesign, du kunne bruge.
