PFCAs restricted from February 2023
The European Commission has published a regulation restricting certain perfluorocarboxylic acids (C9-C14 PFCAs) – a subgroup of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This decision follows the proposal of the German and Swedish authorities and the opinion of ECHA’s scientific committees.
PFCAs cannot be placed on the market or used in most applications from 23 February 2023 onwards. Some uses have been granted longer transition periods.
The restriction is in line with the EU’s aspirations to phase out all non-essential uses of PFAS and will reduce or prevent exposure of people and the environment to PFCAs, as well as avoiding the regrettable substitution of PFOA, which has been globally banned since July 2020.
Canadian authorities have also proposed to list PFCAs as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under the Stockholm Convention.

Reminder: Call for information on PFAS
Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden intend to send their proposal to restrict the manufacture, placing on the market and use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to ECHA by 15 July 2022.
They are now looking for more information for the intended restriction to fill knowledge gaps, particularly concerning alternatives to PFAS.
The deadline for comments is 19 September 2021.
