Det Videnskabelige Udvalg vedrørende Grænseværdier for Erhvervsmæssig Eksponering for Kemiske Agenser blev første gang nedsat af Europa-Kommissionen i 1995 med det formål at vurdere de potentielle sundhedsmæssige virkninger af erhvervsmæssig eksponering for farlige kemikalier på grundlag af de senest tilgængelige videnskabelige data. Stoffer inkluderet i dette register er blevet vurderet af udvalget indtil 2018, hvor dets mandat udløb.
De sundhedsbaserede videnskabelige anbefalinger er blevet anvendt til at fastsætte grænseværdier for erhvervsmæssig eksponering for at beskytte arbejdstagerne mod kemiske risici i henhold til direktivet om kemiske agenser og direktivet om kræftfremkaldende stoffer og mutagener. Dette direktiv er senere blevet erstattet af direktivet om kræftfremkaldende stoffer, mutagener og reproduktionstoksiske stoffer (2004/37/EF).
Registret, der tidligere blev offentliggjort på udvalgets websted, indeholder en liste over stoffer, for hvilke udvalget har vedtaget anbefalinger og udtalelser vedrørende toksikologiske vurderinger af stoffer, der påvirker arbejdstageres sundhed.
