Additional information

Only a few data about the effects on terrestrial organisms are available. In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, terrestrial toxicity studies do not need to be conducted as the equilibrium partitioning method in first instance could be applied to assess the hazard. In addition, no relevant exposure of the terrestrial compartment is expected as 1,2-Dichloroethane released to soil surfaces is expected to volatilize rapidly to the atmosphere. Due to this high mobility an accumulation and exposure of the substance in the soil compartement is unlikely. Consequently, no studies are proposed for 1,2-dichloroethane.

In addition to that, the available information indicate that the substance is non-toxic and of low environmental concern. The 48 hour contact LC50- value on the earthworm Eisenia fetida was determined to be of 60 μg/cm2 and the ED50 of Nicotiana tabacum pollen was determined to be 17.1 mg 1,2-dichloroethane/cm2.
