This page provides further information on the applications for authorisation or review reports, which have undergone consultation. The applications for authorisation are in the opinion development phase until the final opinions of the Committees for Risk Assessment and Socio-economic Analysis have been adopted and sent to the European Commission. Its decision-making process can be followed through the comitology register, where further information is published about the REACH Committee's past and upcoming meetings.

On 1 February 2020, the United Kingdom (UK) withdrew from the EU. The transition period provided by the withdrawal agreement ended on 31 December 2020. As of 1 January 2021, an application for an authorisation submitted by a person established in the UK (except Northern Ireland) is no longer valid in the EU, unless that application has been transferred to a legal entity established in the EU or Northern Ireland before the end of the transition period. Therefore, authorisation applications and decisions in so far as these concern persons established in the UK (except Northern Ireland) are no longer considered valid.

Use name
Industrial use of trichloroethylene as process chemical (enclosed systems) in Alcantara Material production
Broad information on use applied for (conditions of use and function)
Conditions of use and function:
Trichloroethylene (TRI) is used by Alcantara S.p.A. in an enclosed system to remove polystyrene (PST) from an intermediate product during the manufacture of Alcantara®, an avantgarde synthetic material offering an unparalleled combination of sensory, aesthetic and functional qualities.
Alcantara®, which is a material composed of about 70% polyester (PET) and 30% polyurethane, and finds application in different sectors such as automotive, interior (aviation and marine), fashion & accessories and consumer electronics.
TRI fulfils the following key functionalities during the manufacturing process:
- It provides excellent solvency power to guarantee a complete extraction of PST from the intermediate product
- It can be restless removed from the intermediate product at low temperature
- It does not attack PST and polyester (Alcantara® raw materials)
- It is not flammable (use of flammable solvents must be avoided due to the risk of explosion during drying)
- It provides good stability during repeated extraction and recycling does not attack pipes and machines
- Ensure a residue-free end product (≤ 0.5% of the solvent)
- It has low evaporation energy to be recycled with reasonable energy demands.

All the above-mentioned key functionalities must be met by an alternative solvent to be successfully implemented in the manufacturing process currently operating at the ALCANTARA’s site (solvent-based process).
TRI is only applied at one site in Nera Montoro (Italy).
Annual tonnage used: 10 – 200
