Description of key information

The information requirement is waived based on Column 2 guidance.  Only one relevant supporting study has been identified for the moment (Hulzebos et al., 1993), which reports results of a seedling emergence and seedling growth test with lettuce (Lactuca sativa) .

Test substance loss was observed in all experiments described in the study. In the soil experiments, test concentrations at the end of testing were reported to be < 10% of the concentrations measured at test initiation. However, this is to be expected for a readily biodegradable substance, and recovery of the test substance over the exposure period is not required by the OECD Guideline. In the nutrient solution experiments, test concentrations just before medium renewal were reported to be > 25% of the concentrations measured at medium renewal. However, nominal concentrations were used for calculation of effect concentrations. Consequently, the reported effect concentrations may lead to an underestimation of biphenyl toxicity for terrestrial plants. Measured concentrations were not reported, however the initial concentrations from extracted soil were found to be within an acceptable range of 70 - 150% of nominal concentrations. No information is reported on control performance.
