The water solubility of biphenyl was determined using the flask method (Wauchope and Getzen, 1972) and reported to be 7.35 mg/L at 25 °C. This study is considered as a key study. The review paper of Pearlman et al (1984) summarizes nine critically-reviewed and acceptable water solubility values ranging from 38.6 to 55 micromole/L (5.95 - 8.48 mg/L).
Although the column elution method is the method of preference for
substances exhibiting water solubility less than10 mg/L, the flask
method used by Wauchope and Getzen (1972) is considered acceptable for
biphenyl as longer equilibrium periods (up to three weeks) were applied.
