ECHA sees broad use of alternatives for chemical safety assessment

The fifth report on the use of alternatives to testing on animals for the REACH Regulation shows that adaptations continue to be used more than experimental studies, with read-across being the most frequent option. In vitro non-animal test methods have seen a significant uptake in recent years.

Additional information about the hazard properties of 75 substances from 370 tests has recently been published as IUCLID datasets. This more than doubles the amount of data that was made initially available for the scientific community developing alternative test methods when the joint initiative kicked off a year ago.

Robust study summaries effectively support hazard assessment

The final report of the OECD’s project, led by ECHA, on the role of robust study summaries for the hazard assessment of chemicals finds they are fit for purpose. It has also identified a number of areas for improvement to further increase their trustworthiness and usefulness.
