Save the date: 23 September 2011 – REACH Conference in European Commission, Brussels

The European Commission, in cooperation with ECHA, is organising a REACH conference on 23 September 2011 in the European Commission's Charlemagne Building in Brussels. The conference will focus on the results of the first registration round, the lessons learnt, and on how to enhance preparations for the registration deadline of May 2013.

The programme includes the European Commissioner for the Environment Janez Potočnik, the ECHA Executive Director Geert Dancet and Director Christel Musset, as well as speakers from industry, authorities and NGOs. All REACH stakeholders are invited: authorities, industry associations (in particular those who focus on SMEs), consumer associations, worker associations, authorities, NGOs, and international partners.

ECHA and Japanese government institutions start working together

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), the Japanese Ministry for Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW), the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) and the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) are strengthening their relationship in the area of chemicals safety.

ECHA updates the REACH Candidate List

Seven new substances have been added to the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) for authorisation. Companies manufacturing or importing these substances, or articles containing the substances, need to check their potential obligations that result from the listing.

Committee for Socio-economic Analysis adopts its first opinion and agrees on two draft opinions on restriction proposals under REACH

At its meeting in Helsinki 14-16 June 2011, the Committee for Socio-economic Analysis (SEAC) adopted its opinion on a restriction of dimethylfumarate (DMFu) in articles and agreed on draft opinions on restrictions concerning mercury in measuring devices and phenylmercury compounds.

Second public consultation on restricting five phenylmercury compounds and mercury in measuring devices

ECHA calls for comments on the Committee for Socio-economic Analysis' draft opinion on one restriction proposal concerning the manufacturing, placing on the market and use of five phenylmercury compounds. The Agency is also asking for comments on a proposal restricting the placing on the market of mercury in several measuring devices that are used in industrial and professional settings. The deadline for comments on both proposals is 16 August 2011.
