1,1,1 -trichloroethane displays similar moderate acute toxicity to marine and freshwater species of fish, invertebrates and algae. A limited number of chronic studies are available for fish and invertebrates. The applicant believes that there are sufficient studies available of acceptable quality to permit a valid risk assessment to be conducted. The Kaw (air/water partition coefficient) is very low therefore it is essential to conduct all toxicity assessments in closed vessels preferably with analytical determination of the concentration tested. The information available has been reviewed by several authors (euro Chlor, 1999) who conclude that the type of toxicity expressed by 1,1,1-trichloroethane is basic rather than specific (there is no definitive mode of action) and it is therefore possible to use studies conducted in either the freshwater or marine environment for risk assessment for both environments. In addition they are also of the opinion that there are sufficient good studies available to permit a valid risk assessment. Only the algae key study (Brack and Rottler 1994) departed from the bulk of data. As it has also been observed on several other substances tested in this paper a new study has recently been commissioned and results available (Gancet, 2011) for updating the registration dossier. The 3 trophic levels used for classification and risk assessment have data that can be summarised as follows:
