Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance does not contain metals or metalloids and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Study period:
04/2010
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
04/2010
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study without detailed documentation
Qualifier:
according to
Guideline:
other: UN N.1
GLP compliance:
no

The test substance melted when approached by the ignition flame. The test substance did not burn up or down.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
DL Menthol is classified as not flammable solid
Executive summary:

The flammability of a substance is determined following the methods N.1 (UN-manual of testing). However, DL-Menthol melted when approached by the ignition flame. The test substance did not burn up or down. Therefore the substance is not a flammable solid.

Description of key information

1.) Flammability - burning rate, solids:
Menthol is classified as not flammable solid. The substance melted when approached by the ignition flame. The test substance did not burn up or down.
2.) Flammability - contact with water:
In accordance with section 1 of REACH Annex XI, a study does not need to be conducted as it is scientifically unjustified. Based on experience during handling and use, the substance does not liberate highly flammable gases on contact with water or humid air and the structural formula of the test item contains none of the functional groups quoted in Manual of Tests and Criteria, Appendix 6, Article 5.3.
3.) Flammability – pyrophoric properties:
In accordance with section 1 of REACH Annex XI, a study does not need to be conducted as it is scientifically unjustified. Based on experience during handling and use, no pyrophoric properties were observed and the structure does not give a reference to pyrophoric properties.
The application of the other tests shows that the substance does not ignite spontaneously on coming into contact with air at normal temperatures.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

DL-Menthol is not extremely flammable or flammable as referenced by the flash point and auto ignition temperature.

The substance is not flammable in contact with water and has no pyrophoric properties. Based on available information DL-Menthol is not classified for physical hazards according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP).
