Three studies are available for characterizing DOTE biodegradation potential.
Beimborn (2000). Determination of the Biodegradability of TZ 03499 in the Manometric Respirometry Test. Testing laboratory: BASF Aktiengesellschaft, Ecology and Environmental Analytics, Laboratory of Ecology, D-67056 Ludwigshafen, Germany. Report no.: Project No. 99/0607/26/1. Owner company: Chemtura Organometallics Germany although report states Witco GmbH D-59192, Ernst-Schering-Str. 14, Postfach 1620, 59192 Bergkamen, Germany. Report date: 2000-11-17.
Baumann, W. (1992a). Report on the test for ready biodegradability in the Modified Sturm Test of Irgastab 17 MOK-A. Testing laboratory: CIBA-GEIGY Ltd., Product Safety, Ecotoxicology, R-1066. P., CH-4002, Basel, Switzerland. Report no.: Test No.: 928320. Owner company: CIBA-GEIGY Ltd., AD-Division, CH-4002, Basel, Switzerland. Report date: 1992-12-11.
Baumann, W. (1992b). Report on the test for ready biodegradability in the Modified Sturm Test of Irgastab 17 MOK. Testing laboratory: CIBA-GEIGY Ltd., Product Safety, Ecotoxicology, CH-4002 Basel, Switzerland. Report no.: Test No.: 928325. Owner company: CIBA-GEIGY Ltd., AD-Division, CH-4002, Basel, Switzerland. Report date: 1992-12-11.
The key study identified is the Beimborn' one.
A result of 30 -40% after 28 days and 40 -50% after 74 days for freshwater biodegradation is reported. According to Annex XIII of EC Regulation 1907/2006, which states the criteria for very persistent substances as biodegradation in water: T½>60 days in marine, fresh- or estuarine water; the substance should therefore be considered as a potentially very persistent substance.
