Description of key information

Based on weight of evidence solubility of TEL in water is in the range 0.1 to 2.35 mg/l and can therefore be classed as slightly soluble. For the purposes of the CSA, the highest result obtained of 2.35 mg/l is used based on the experimental data for freshwater at 20°C, from Grove

Additional information

Weight of evidence is used for this endpoint

TEL is a non polar hydrophobic organic substance. The true solubility in both freshwater and seawater could be as low as 0.10 - 0.20 mg/l. However, TEL has the tendency to form super saturated solutions hence higher solubility values are quoted in some literature.

With this mind, three endpoint studies are given for solubility of TEL, although one is only considered as a supporting study due to the lack of detail of both the method used and the conditions. Solubility results obtained range from 0.1 to 2.35 mg/l with the lowest value being from the supporting study. As such all results point to TEL being classed as slightly soluble.

The most detailed study showed a result of <2.35 mg/l in freshwater at 20°C which is also the highest result obtained in any of the studies and is hence selected as the key value for the CSA.

Although detail of the methods used in all the studies is somewhat limited, the results are all very similarly reported so are considered to be suitable for use as weight of evidence for this end point. As such, no further work is planned
