Calculations:

ν=ct-----------------------------------------(i)

Where,

ν= Kinematic viscosity

c= Viscometer constant

t= time of flow in seconds (Redwood second)

For Red Wood Viscometer no. 1, the values for the constants are as below:

Time of flow,t

C

40 to 85 seconds

0.264

85 to 2000

0.247

ν= η/ρ------------------------------ (ii)

Where,

ν= Kinematic viscosity

η= Dynamic viscosity

ρ= Density of fluid

Calculation of Kinematic Viscosities:

For Test Temperature at 20 °C

ν=ct

= 147.3 × 0.247sec

= 36.3831mm²/sec

For Test Temperature at 40°C

ν=ct

= 101.3 × 0.247sec

= 25.0211 mm²/sec

Calculation of Dynamic Viscosities:

For Test Temperature at 20°C

ν= η/ρ

36.3831 =η 1.0534

η = 36.3831 x 1.0534

= 38.3259 mPa.S

For Test Temperature at 40°C

ν= η/ρ

25.0211 =η/ 1.0534

η = 25.0211 x 1.0534

= 26.3572 mPa.S

Conclusions:
The kinematic viscosity (experimental) at 20 °C and 40 °C was determined to be 36.3831 mm²/sec and 25.0211 mm²/sec, respectively and the dynamic viscosity (calculated) at 20°C and 40°C was determined to be 38.3259 mPa.S and 26.3572 mPa.S, respectively.
Executive summary:

An experiment was performed to determine the viscosity of test chemical by using OECD Test Guideline 114 (Viscosity of Liquids). In this experiment redwood viscometer was used. During the experiment, temperature of the test chemical was kept constant at 20°C. The same experiment was then repeated at test temperature of 40°C. Dynamic viscosity was then calculated by multiplying the values of kinematic viscosity and density of test chemical. Three readings were taken for each temperature (i.e. at 20 °C and 40 °C).
