Additional information

Skin irritation

Three different experiments on this endpoint were presented by BASF AG (1981).

Two White Vienna rabbits receiced 0.5 mL undiluted test substance on the shaved skin. The exposure duration was 2 h under occlusive conditions (then washing off). The skin reactions were examined 24 & 48 h and 8 days post treatment. Score of erythema and edema were 2-3 24 and 48 h after application, the effects were not reversible; superficial necroses developed within 8 days following application.

In a 2nd trial using similar experimental design score of erythema and edema were 2 in two rabbits 24 and 48 h after application of 0.5 mL undiluted test substance and occlusive exposure for 2 h; at day 8 slight effects were found as well as desquamation (no later scoring).

In a 3rd experiment 6 White Vienna rabbits were exposed for 24 h under occlusive conditions to 0.5 mL of the undiluted test substance and scoring was performed immediately after the end of the exposure period and 1, 2, and 7 days after removal. Well defined to moderate erythema and edema were noted in all animals at the intact skin test sites. These skin reactions were seen at all examinations on days 0, 1, 2, and 8 after patch removal. Desquamation was noted and confirmed by pathology in all 6 rabbits at treated intact skin sites on day 7 after patch removal.

Eye irritation

Two Vienna White rabbits received instillation of one drop (appr. 50 mm³) of the undiluted test substance into the conjunctival sac. The other eye was treated with physiological saline for control. Scoring was performed 10 minutes, 1, 3, 24, 48, 72 hours and 4, 7 and 8 days after instillation. The reddening, edema or corneal opacity reached max. score 1 in both rabbits and was completely reversible in one rabbit after 24 h and in the other after 48 h. Conclusion: Undiluted test substance was only slightly irritant to the rabbit eye (BASF 1974).

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: irritating

Effects on eye irritation: slightly irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

Isobutyl vinyl ether is irritating to the skin. Therefore, classification with H315 (Cat. 2) is warranted according to EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
