Description of key information

Based on weight of evidence approach, 1,2,3-Trichloropropane has a flash point in the range of 160 - 164 °F (closed cup).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Compilation of flash point data on 1,2,3 -Trichloropropane:

Data source Flash point (°F)  Flash point (°C)   Method

American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Documentation of the Threshold Limit Values and Biological Exposure Indices (1986)

 Hawley's Condensed Chemical Dictionary. 11th ed. (1987) 180   82  open cup
 MSDS (2009)  169 76   closed cup
 Daunderer (1990)  165 74  no data
National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE), Japan (2009)  160 -164  71 -73  closed cup

Both values of "American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists; Documentation of the Threshold Limit Values and Biological Exposure Indices (1986)" and  "Hawley's Condensed Chemical Dictionary, 11th ed. (1987)" were taken from peer reviewed and Klimisch-2 -rated data collections. The values from the 2009 MSDS and from Daunderer are considered Klimisch 4 only. All in all the data set is considered consistent and therefore robust. The slightly different values of the two Klimisch 2 rated data sources can be explained by the different methods used, i.e. closed cup method and open cup method. Eventually the value 160 -164 °F is highlighted; this is also the flash point range given by the "National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE), Japan (2009)", who themselves are referring to "American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists; Documentation of the Threshold Limit Values and Biological Exposure Indices (1986)".
