A study was conducted to determine the ready
biodegradability of the test substance in water via measurement of O2
consumption according to EU Method C.4-E, in compliance with GLP.
Activated sludge from an activated sludge plant treating predominantly
domestic sewage, was used as inoculum. The sludge was pre-conditioned to
reduce the endogenous respiration rate by aeration for a period of 3 d.
The sludge concentration was 2 mg/dm3. Sodium acetate was used as the
reference substance. The test substance degraded 88% in 15 d and at 95%
in 28 d. The validity criteria of the study was fulfilled. Under the
study conditions, the substance was readily biodegradable (van Ginkel,
Ethylenediamine is readily biodegradable in screening tests.
