Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Long-term toxicity to fish: Weight of evidence: Read-across from experimental results with the substance sodium trichloroacetate. NOEC lower than 7 ppm (63 days) for Cyprinus carpio.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Weight of evidence: Read-across from experimental results with the substance sodium trichloroacetate. NOEC lower than 7 ppm (63 days) for Cyprinus carpio; basis for effect: weight. The 7 ppm group had 10% weight loss, compared with control fish. A pronounced dark coloring of the skin was detectable for the treated group. There was atony of the melanophores, increased mucous discharge and cellular necroses. The musculature was atrophied and showed hyaline degeneration.Other experimental data are reported from a different independent source where the LC0 (30 days) was 7370 mg/L for Cyprinus sp.

Read-across:

Based on published experimental data on the analogue sodium trichloroacetate (the NOEC was lower than 7 ppm, basis for effect: weight loss) and the molecular weights, the read-across approach is applied and the NOEC for trichloroacetic acid is calculated to be lower than 6.17 ppm.

Based on published experimental data on the analogue sodium trichloroacetate (the LC50 was 10720 mg/l) and the molecular weights, the read-across approach is applied and the LC50 for trichloroacetic acid is calculated to be 9450 mg/l.
