Conclusion on classification

AQUATIC ENVIRONMENT

Data available for 2,4 -dinitrophenol for the aquatic compartment are available for three thropic level: algae, crustaceans and fish.

Basing on ecotoxicity data, and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 CLP, 2,4 -dinitrophenol it can be classified as very toxic to aquatic life H400 Aquatic Acute 1.

It has to be noted that this classification is based on the only acute endpoint LC50 390 µg/L on fish, but 2,4 -dinitrophenol shows many low LC50, EC50, NOEC values for fresh and marine water that indicates also toxicity to crustacean and fish reproduction. Hence, the classification of H410 Aquatic chronic 1, very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects can be appropriate.

Furthermore, data on toxicity on microorganisms and soil macroorganisms as earthworms and arthropods revealed that 2,4 -dinitrophenol could be toxic for terrestrial compartment.
