Description of key information

Based in the result obtained by a valid GLP-OECD 201 study with graphite as test item no toxic effects were found up to the highest tested concentration of 100 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L

Additional information

The results for the EC50 and the NOEC (both > 100 mg/L) are based on the nominal loading of the test item. Since it is not possible to detect the substance graphite in the test solution, no other value than the loading amount is available. Due to the poor water solubility of the test item the medium for the algae test was prepared according to OECD Guidance 23 "GUIDANCE DOCUMENT ON AQUATIC TOXICITY TESTING OF DIFFICULT SUBSTANCES AND MIXTURES" as water accommodated fraction (WAF).

The test item used for the algal test consist of a mixture of two different graphite qualities, representing a typical spectrum of graphite's impurities. In the test conducted, no significant signs of toxicity were observed. In conclusion, neither the material graphite itself nor its impurities reached concentrations where aquatoxic effects on algae occurred. The substances graphite is considered not to be toxic for aquatic plants (algae).
