MS-Silane is considered to be corrosive based on read across to structurally similar constituents. There are no reliable studies available for eye irritation. Further testing was not required as the test substance is classified as corrosive to skin.

The skin corrosion/irritation effects for MS-Silane were derived using the data for four structurally similar constituents of MS-Silane [dichloro(dimethyl)silane, CAS 75 -78 -5 (20 - 35% in MS-Silane); dichloro(methyl)silane, CAS 75 -54 -7 (0 - 20% in MS-Silane); tetrachlorosilane, CAS 10026-04-7 (0 – 15% in MS-Silane); and Chlorotrimethylsilane, CAS 75-77-4 ( 0 – 5% in MS-Silane)]. These constituents make up approximately 48% of MS-Silane (20 - 75%). All of these MS-Silane constituents were found to be corrosive in reliable studies completed according to or equivalent to the OECD 404 test guideline. Constituents of unknown corrosion/irritation potential make up approximately 61% of MS-Silane (35 - 87%) and are predicted to be corrosive based on structural similarity (i.e., all but one constituent are low molecular weight chlorosilanes).
There are no reliable studies available for eye irritation. Further testing was not required as the test substance is classified as corrosive to skin.

Justification for classification or non-classification
The test substance is labelled 'Skin Corr. 1A' under Regulation 1272/2008. This is based on the skin irritation/corrosion data that are available for four MS-Silane constituents that show the test substance to be corrosive to the skin. It is assumed that substances that are corrosive to the skin are also damaging to the eyes, so there is no separate labelling for the eyes. There are no specific data for respiratory irritation. However, the pathology examination in the key acute inhalation read across studies revealed signs of respiratory irritation/corrosion. The test substance is labelled as 'STOT-Single Category 3, May cause respiratory irritation', and the hazard statement 'EUH071 Corrosive to the respiratory tract' is proposed.
