Chlorosilanes as a class rapidly hydrolyze which means that photodegradation is not a relevant process. Water soluble silanols such as methylsilanediol will undergo aqueous photolytic oxidative demethylation with tropospheric ultraviolet radiation in the presence of suitable chromophores.

Experiments carried out for silanols indicate that water soluble silanols such as methylsilanediol will undergo aqueous photolytic oxidative demethylation with tropospheric ultraviolet radiation in the presence of suitable chromophores, such as nitrogen oxides, to give silicic acid and carbon dioxide (Buch 1983).
