AA was naturally found in nine chlorophyceae species, ten rhodophyceae species and eleven phaeophyceae species as antimicrobial substance.

For the microorganisms in the rumen of sheeps, AA is part of the propionic acid cycle and serves as safety valve in the case of lactate accumulation (after feeding carbohydrate rich diet).
