Two determinations of melting point resulted in the melting ranges: 16.9 °C - 17.9 °C and 16.5 °C - 18.2 °C, mean value was reported as 16.7 °C to 18.1 °C (289.9 K to 291.3 K) +/- 0.4 °C.

Conclusions:
The melting range of the test substance 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA) has been determined to be 16.7 °C to 18.1 °C (289.9 K to 291.3 K) +/- 0.4 °C.

Study performed in experimental laboratory (Paulus, 2008, LAUS) dedicated to estimate the melting point of the test material 3 -mercaptopropionic acid (3 -MPA) has been chosen as a key study. The melting range has been determined to be: 16.7 °C to 18.1 °C (289.9 K to 291.3 K) +/- 0.4 °C by using capillary method with an aluminium block (in accordance with the OECD Guideline 102 as of 27. July 1995 "Melting Point/Melting Range" and EU-Method A.1 "Melting/Freezing Temperature").

Two other available supporting studies (Lide, 2000 and Lewis, 1977) report the melting points (16.8 °C and 18 °C) for the 3 -mercaptopropionic acid, which are in the melting range determined in the key study.
