Description of key information

The sediment toxicity of zinc lactate can be understood in terms of the sediment toxicity of zinc(II) and lactic acid. Lactic acid is readily biodegradable (see 5.2.1) and is a ubiquitous and essential molecule of life. It will not adsorb to soil or sediment (see 5.4.1). Therefore, no lactate-related hazard for sediment organisms is identified. For zinc, the ecotoxicological information from the zinc chloride dossier is included. For zinc, a lowest NOEC of 201 mg/kg is available, corresponding to 748 mg/kg zinc lactate.
