Additional information

In contact with water methyl formate will hydrolyse slowly (> 12 h, ph 7). In air, the substance is expected to be photodegraded slowly by OH-radicals with a half-life of 70.7 d. Methyl formate is readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria (OECD TG 310) (BASF AG, 1997). Based on a measured log Kow of -0.21 significant accumulation in organisms is not expected. Adsorption to the solid soil phase is not expected (BASF AG, 2006). From the water or moist soil surface methyl formate will slowly evaporato into the atmosphere.

Following the Mackay Level I calculations, methyl formate will preferentially distribute into air (98.1 %) (ECT, 2007).
