Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

Parent compound methyl formate:

Methyl formate is not P/vP since it is readily biodegradable. The substance is also not B/vB based on a measured log Kow -0.21, indicating no significant potential for bioaccumulation. The substance is not T since the lowest available chronic value is > 0.01 mg/L and the substance holds no relevant classification.

However, the rapid hydrolysis will be the major fate process of the methyl formate under environmentally relevant conditions (pH 7-9, see IUCLID Ch. 5.1.2). Therefore, thePBT/vPvB assessmentis also performed for the hydrolytic products: formic acid and methanol.

Hydrolysis product methanol:

Methanol is not P/vP since it is readily biodegradable. The substance is also not B/vB based on a measured log Kow -0.77, indicating no significant potential for bioaccumulation. The substance is not T since the lowest available chronic value is > 0.01 mg/L and the substance holds no relevant classification.

Hydrolysis product formic acid:

Formic acid is not P/vP since it is readily biodegradable. The substance is also not B/vB based on a measured log Kow -2.1, indicating no significant potential for bioaccumulation. The substance is not T since the lowest available chronic value is > 0.01 mg/L and the substance holds no relevant classification.

In conclusion, the parent compound along with its hydrolysis products methanol and formic acid, are not to be considered as a PBT/vPvB substance.
