Three studies are available investigating the short-term and long-term toxicity of Reaction mass of 1,1'-(isopropylidene)bis[3,5-dibromo-4-(2,3-dibromo-2-methylpropoxy)benzene] and 1,3-dibromo-2-(2,3-dibromo-2-methylpropoxy)-5-{2-[3,5-dibromo-4-(2,3,3-tribromo-2-methylpropoxy)phenyl]propan-2-yl}benzene (EC 944-461-4) to soil organisms. The studies were conducted according to OECD guidelines and GLP.

One study is available investigating the short-term toxicity of the test item to the earthworm Eisenia fetida and resulted in a LC50 (14 d) of > 1000 mg/kg dry soil.

One experimental study is available investigating the chronic effects of the test item on seedling emergence and growth of plants. The study was performed according to OECD guideline 208 under GLP conditions. Six species of non-target terrestrial plants (2 monocots and 4 dicots) were exposed to the single concentration of 1000 mg a.i./kg dry soil for 21 d. Analytical verification of the concentration was provided by the recorded weights of the test item added to the soil. Statistical analysis of data was performed to obtain NOEC, LOEC and EC50 values for germination, survival, height and biomass (wet weight). Since no effects were observed in any plant and for any parameter, the NOEC (21 d) was derived to be ≥ 1000 mg/kg dry soil.

One experimental study is available investigating the effects of the test item on the nitrogen and carbon transformation. The study was performed according to OECD 216 (nitrogen transformation) and 217 (carbon transformation) under GLP conditions. For the nitrogen as well as for the carbon transformation test sandy loam soil was exposed for 28 d to the nominal concentrations of 10, 32, 100, 320 and 1000 mg test item/kg dry weight soil. For nitrogen transformation statistically significant effects were observed at 1000 mg test item/kg dry weight soil, therefore the NOEC (28 d) was considered to be 320 mg test item/kg dry weight soil. However, the observed effect was an increase in N-transformation compared to the control (26.82%). Thus, it is not anticipated that the substance has any negative effects on the N-transformation in soil. Concerning the carbon transformation no statistically significant effects were observed up to the test item concentration of 1000 mg test item/kg dry weight soil. Therefore the NOEC (28 d) was determined to be ≥ 1000 mg test item/kg dry weight soil.
