Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In a guideline (OECD 202) and GLP acute toxicity study (48 -hr; static), Daphnia magna were exposed to dipropylene glycol monoethyl ether at concentrations up to 150 mg/L. Based on the findings of this study the 48 -hr EC50 for immobilization of daphnia by DPGEE was extrapolated to be ~180 mg/L (77 - 425 95% CL). This result seems unusually low and is in fact lower than the NOEC from the reproduction (chronic) study; US EPA ECOSAR software (v1.00a) estimates the 48 -hr Daphnid LC50 for dipropylene glycol monoethyl etherto be 2297 mg/L, respectively. This difference should be taken into account in the choice of appropriate starting points and assessment factors for the derivation of the short term PNEC.
