Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

No evidence of mutagenicity was seen in an Ames test in the presence or absence of an exogenous metabolic activation system (Brusick, 1977). The absence of a response was confirmed in a non-standard published Ames test. No evidence of chromosomal aberrations was noted in the bone marrow or spermatids of male mice exposed (ip) to phosphorus trichloride.

Short description of key information:
A guideline-comparable study (Ames test) is available for phosphorus trichloride. A non-standard published study is also available. A published in vivo study is also available.

Endpoint Conclusion: No adverse effect observed (negative)

Justification for classification or non-classification

Phosphorus trichloride is not classified for genotoxicity according to Directive 67/548/EEC. No classification for genotoxicity is proposed on the basis of this negative study.
