Description of key information

In a reliable (Klimisch 2, guideline-compliant) study of the toxicity of DMT to aquatic microorganisms (Voelskow, 1989), the 3 -h EC50, based on inhibition of respiration of activated sludge, was >1000 mg/L. Slight (10%) Inhibition, relative to the untreated control, was observed at 1000 mg/L, the highest concentration tested. The inhibition of respiration remained at 0 % at 500 mg/L. Therefore, the NOEC is deemed to be 500 mg/L. All the nominal concentrations applied exceeded the water-solubility of the test substance.
In a further, non-Guideline study (Anonymous, 1993c), the inhibitory effects of DMT were determined in relation to the respiration rate of Pseudomonas putida, an aerobic bacterium ubiquitous in aquatic and terrestrial environments and among STP microflora. The 5-hour EC50 exceeded 2000 mg DMT/L, the highest concentration tested.
