Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The 72 hour EC50 value of 5-amino-o-cresol to Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata for inhibition of yield, biomass and growth rate were 17, 18 and 41 mg/L, respectively, based on geometric mean concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
41 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
3.3 mg/L

Additional information

The toxicity of 5-Amino-o-cresol toPseudokirchneriella subcapitatawas determined in a 72 hours algae growth inhibition test, under static conditions, following the OECD 201 guideline and the GLP.

Based on the results of range finding test, the definitive test was conducted at following nominal test concentrations:

0 (control),0.32, 1.0, 3.2, 10, 32 and 100 mg/L. The geometric meanmeasured concentrations were0,0.36, 1.2, 3.3, 11, 28 and 93 mg/L.As the measured concentrations were not within the range of 80 - 120% of nominal, results were based on geometric mean measured concentrations.

Endpoints evaluated were EC50of yield, biomass and growth rate over a period of 72 hours. 3 replicates were tested for each test concentration and 6 replicates for control. A background control and a surrogate vessel (for sampling) at each concentration were used.

The test substance was found to inhibit the growth of freshwater green alga after 72 hours of exposure with the following effects (based on geometric mean measured concentrations):

EyC50: 17 mg/L (based on inhibition of yield),

EbC50: 18mg/L (based on inhibition of biomass) and

ErC50: 41 mg/L (based on inhibition of growth rate)

The corresponding NOEC values for yield, biomass and specific growth rate after 72 hours were 1.2, 1.2 and 3.3 mg/L, respectively.
