Description of key information

The 5-amino-o-cresol (target chemical)  is not considered as explosive, on the basis of thermal sensitivity, and mechanical sensitivity with respect to shock and friction tests.

Additional information

The explosive property of 4-Amino-m-cresol (source chemical) was determined, following the EU A.14 method. In this study, the test material was evaluated to determine whether the test material presents a danger of explosion when submitted to the effect of flame (thermal sensitivity), or to shock or friction (mechanical sensitivity).

In thermal sensitivity test, none of the six tests (three of them with 6 mm orifice plate and the remaining with 2 mm orifice plate) gave rise to explosion or breaking of each tube. The test material did not explode or break down with 50 J impact energy, due to the effect of shock. Therefore, the test material is less sensitive than 1,3-dinitrobenzene taken as reference substance (40 J). During the six tests for the effect of friction, the test material did not explode with 360 N energy load applied.

4-Amino-m-cresol is non-explosive, on the basis of thermal sensitivity, and mechanical sensitivity with respect to shock and friction tests. By applying a read-across between the 5-amino-o-cresol (target chemical) and the 4-Amino-m-cresol (source chemical), the 5-amino-o-cresol (target chemical)  is not considered as explosive, on the basis of thermal sensitivity, and mechanical sensitivity with respect to shock and friction tests.

5-amino-o-cresol (target chemical)  is not considered as explosive, on the basis of results of thermal sensitivity, and mechanical sensitivity with respect to shock and friction tests performed on an analog, 4-Amino-m-cresol.
