Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Ion conductivity of molten ferrous slag is approximately 0.0005 m/Ω mm2 at 1100 -1400 °C

Additional information

Ion conductivity

At a temperature of 1100 -1400 °C, liquid ferrous slags have an ion conductivity of approximately 0.0005 m/Ω mm2 (Krajewsky and Krueger 1984).

Radioactivity

To assess a possible risk from radiation emitted by slags, the levels of radioactive isotopes of Ra and K were determined in a mixture of BOS/SMS and EAF C/EAF S. The measurements were performed by a gamma radiation spectrometry method. All radioisotpes were in the range of natural background values suggesting that slags do not contain more radioactivity than natural rock, e.g. granite, basalt or greywacke. Due to the low radioactivity which was in the range of background values of the earthcrust, there is no radiological risk associated with slags Central Mining Institute 2005).

To assess a possible risk from radiation emitted by slags, the levels of radioactive key isotopes of K, Th and Ra were determined in SMS. The measurement was performed by a gamma radiation spectrometry method.

Activities of radiactive isotopes detected in SMS were:

40K: 25 Bq/kg

232Th: 12 -14 Bq/kg

238Ra: 33 -38 Bq/kg

Due to the low radioactivity, there is no radiological risk associated with steelmaking slags (Galonska and Schreiter 2000).
