EC number: 294-409-3
CAS number: 91722-09-7
Substance formed during processing of liquid steel or during production of iron castings. Consists primarily of fused silicates and trace elements as oxides as well as trace of alloying elements.
Boiling range > 2000 °C
As ferrous slags are UVCB composed of several fused silicates, they have
no well-defined boiling point but a boiling range. The transition from
the liquid state to the gas phase occurs at temperatures of more than
2000 °C (estimated), being influenced by the exact composition of the
molten slag. In general, during production and use, the temperatures are
several hundred °C below the boiling point and due to the high input of
energy required to reach this temperature, no incidental heating to the
boiling range is possible.
