Phosphonate salts are highly water soluble and some are formulated as aqueous. Solutions containing up to 70% active material. Free acids are less soluble than the salts; however, aqueous solutions in excess of l % active material can be prepared.

An infinite water solubility value was reported in the handbook which represents the water solubility is greater than >1 *10E+6 (the substance is miscible in water).

Conclusions:
ATMP-H was reported as miscible in water in a handbook which has been subject to peer-review and in which the original data sources are traceable. The result is considered to be reliable.

The substance is manufactured and marketed in aqueous solutions of various pH values and concentrations. It is known that up to 50% m/m solutions can be prepared, which would have very acidic pH (see section 2.12). At pH 7 the substance is multiply-ionised and solutions of over 50% m/m can be prepared.

Description of key information

Water solubility (ATMP-xNa): The substance is very soluble in water and has an average water solubility value of >500 to 730 g/L under ambient conditions as described in secondary sources.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
500 g/L

Additional information

The substance ATMP-H (and its analogues) are known to be highly hydrophilic and extremely water-soluble. Although supplier's literature is much less detailed than laboratory study reports, given the range of values expected for these types of substance, the uncertainty is not significant in respect of environmental exposure or human health exposure modelling. Typical concentrations of aqueous solutions in commercial supply provides weight of evidence of high loadings. Water solubility in the range 500 - 730 g/L was reported for the ATMP-H. The results are read-across to the salt as >500 g/L.

Phosphonate salts are highly water soluble and are supplied as aqueous solutions. The aqueous solution of phosphonate salts are miscible in water.

A water solubility of 1000000 mg/L at 25°C was reported for ATMP-H using appropriate predictive method (US Environmental Protection Agency 2008) and is cited in Gledhill WE, Feijtel, TCJ (1992).
