Description of key information

The highest burning rate of the test substance mixture (40 % test substance) was 2.11 mm/s compared to 0.51 mm/s for the reference compound. The addition of cellulose may loosen the test item, prevent melting, and therefore increase the flammability of the test substance. The test item is not classified as "oxidising".

Additional information

The oxidising properties of the test item were determined following EU guideline A.17, Directive 92/69/EEC. The test substance alone did not burn but melted. The highest burning rate of the test substance mixture (40 % test substance) was 2.11 mm/s. The highest burning rate of the reference mixture (60 % barium nitrate) was 0.51 mm/s. It was proven that the higher burning rate of the test item mixture in air is not due to oxidising properties of the test item but caused by mechanically loosening the test substance by the cellulose powder. From the chemical nature of the test item, oxidising properties are unlikely. None of the known oxidising functional groups (i.e. peroxide, nitrate, etc.) are present in the molecule.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the study results the test item does not have to be classfied as oxidising according to Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD) and Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP).
