The solubility of oxalic acid (H2C2O4·2H2O) was determined from the undersaturation direction over a range of NaCl concentrations (0.4 to 1.02 mol·kg−1) at a fixed concentration of HCl (1.02 mol·kg−1) according to the following procedure. A weighed amount of H2C2O4·2H2O representing 2.04 mol·kg−1 oxalate if dissolved, was added to 50 mL Oakridge centrifuge tubes. Known volumes of de-ionized (DI) water, concentrated HCl and
2.0 mol·kg−1 NaCl were added to the centrifuge tubes to reach the desired sample concentration and 30 mL final volume. The samples were placed in a rotating shaker for equilibration (14 days). At the end of the equilibration period samples were centrifuged for 20 min at 2000 g and 5 mL of supernatant was taken for analysis. Liquid samples were analyzed for Cl with liquid chromatography, Dionex DX-500 IC, and total acidity with a VIT90 Titrator. Diluted and acidified (100 μL, 2.08 mol·kg−1 HCl) supernatant was analyzed with a Shimadzu TOC-5000A for non-purgable organic carbon (NPOC).
