Details on test conditions:
TEST SYSTEM
- Testing facility: laboratory
- Test container (type, material, size): aluminium boxes (4.2x2.1x1.6 cm) with glass windows in the lids
- Amount of soil: 0.5 percent agar (8 ml) in aluminium boxes in which appropriate weights of the test substances were dissolved.
0.5 per cent agar (10 ml) in polystyrene pots in which appropriate weights of the test substances were dissolved
- Method of seeding:
- No. of seeds per container: Fifty fruits of Lactuca sativa L. cv. Arctic King (Sutton and Son Ltd) were sown in aluminium boxes
Twenty lettuce fruits were sown in polystyrene pots (2.8 x 3.5 cm) closed by lids floating in the water baths.
Each set contained five replicate pots

GROWTH CONDITIONS
- Light intensity and quality: light conditions according to Reynolds and Thompson (1973)

EFFECT PARAMETERS MEASURED (with observation intervals if applicable) :
Germination at single temperatures was determined by means of thermostatically controlled water baths (±0.5°C).
germination in the pots was counted after 72 h (Reynolds, 1973). Osmotic potentials are given as calculated and have not been determined physicallyAny discrepanties between theoretical and actual values have been ignored for the purposes of this investigation.
Nominal and measured concentrations:
Calculated
Reference substance (positive control):

Key result
Species:
Lactuca sativa
Duration:
72 h
Dose descriptor:
EC50
Effect conc.:
8 other: mM
Nominal / measured:
nominal
Conc. based on:
test mat.
Basis for effect:
germination
Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
The 72 h EC50 was 8 mM.
Executive summary:

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) was exposed to oxalic acid during 72 h. No guideline was used. A 72 h EC50 of 8 mM was determined.
