in water: screening tests
C14-C20, aliphatics (≤2% aromatics) were found to be readily
biodegradable (biodegradation > 60% ThOD) in an OECD 306 ready
biodegradability test. Taking into account that all those substances
have been found biodegradable in seawater 306 test, this is taking over
all screening tests results and lead to the conclusion that all the
substances with the same properties and are therefore considered readily
C14-C18, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, ≤2% aromatics was biodegraded
74% at day 28 in a Closed Bottle test. Hence this substance should be
classified as readily biodegradable.
C14-C17, n-alkanes, <2% aromatics was found to be readily biodegradable
under the conditions of an OECD 301 study meeting the 10-d window.
biodegradation prediction by BIOWIN does not lead to the conclusion that
Icosane would be persistent.
in water: simulation tests
studies conducted according to OECD 306 guideline were available and all
concluded to the ready biodegradability of C14-20 Aliphatics (≤2%
aromatic)i n seawater according to OECD criteria for biodegradability in
in sediment: simulation tests
Aliphatics (≤2% aromatic) are readily biodegradable. Therefore,
simulation tests in sediment are not required.
C14-C20, aliphatics, ≤2% aromatics have been shown to be readily
biodegradable. According to Column 2 of Annex IX on the standard
information requirements, simulation testing on ultimate degradation in
soil does not need to be conducted if the substance is readily
Aliphatics (≤2% aromatic)
were found to be readily biodegradable (biodegradation in natural
seawater > 60% ThOD) in OECD 306 closed bottle test (van Ginkel, 2009a)
as well as in OECD 301 ready biodegradability test (Cidaria, 1994).
Therefore, the substances belonging to the group are considered readily
biodegradable and no further biodegradation studies are deemed necessary.
