Conclusions:
The toxicity test for the inhibition of growth of aquatic microalgae resulted in an ErC50 (72 h) of 79.0 mg/L and a NOErC (72 h) of 9.2 mg/L (geometric mean measured concentrations, OECD 201).

Description of key information

ErC50 (72 h) = 79.0 mg/L (geometric mean measured, OECD 201, D. subspicatus); read-across

NOErC (72 h) = 9.2 mg/L (geometric mean measured, OECD 201, D. subspicatus); read-across

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
79 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
9.2 mg/L

Additional information

No studies investigating the toxicity of Ammonium N-methyl-N-(1-oxododecyl)glycinate (CAS 68003-46-3) to aquatic algae are available. Therefore, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read-across to the structurally related source substance Sodium N-lauroylsarcosinate (CAS 137-16-6) is applied.

Based on the high degree of similarity between the structural and physico-chemical properties of the target and source substance, the source substance is considered suitable representatives for the evaluation of the toxicity of the target substance to aquatic algae. The read-across approach is justified in detail within the analogue justification in IUCLID section 13.

The study investigated the toxicity of the source substance Sodium N-lauroylsarcosinate (CAS 137-16-6) to aquatic algae according to OECD 201 (GLP). Desmodesmus subspicatus was exposed to the nominal test item concentrations of 1.0, 3.2, 10, 32 and 100 mg/L. Analytical measurements were conducted for all test concentrations resulting in 0.035, 2.6, 9.2, 29 and 92 mg/L (geometric mean measured). After 72h inhibition of growth was observed resulting in an EC50 (72 h) of 79 mg/L (meas. geom. mean) and a NOEC (72 h) of 9.2 mg/L (meas. geom. mean).

Based on the available results from a structurally related source substance (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which is characterized by a similar ecotoxicological profile and comparable structure, it can be concluded that the target substance Ammonium N-methyl-N-(1-oxododecyl)glycinate (CAS 68003-46-3) will exhibit similar results.
