Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
self-heating substances / mixtures
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is completely molten at 160°C
Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
12-17 Nov 1998
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
the ignition source was a hot platinum wire (> 1000 °C)
GLP compliance:
yes
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

Performance of the study:

On contact by the hot wire, the substance melted and no flame was observed. No further testing was required.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria

Description of key information

non-flammable on ignition

non-pyrophoric

does not liberate gases in hazardous amounts on contact with water

not self-heating

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

The substance is non-flammable on ignition on the basis of the outcomes of the EU A.10 test. It is non-pyrophoric and not flammable on contact with water based on the chemical structure and experience in handling and use. The substance is not self-heating, because it is a solid completely molten at 160 °C.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available data on flammability of the test substance do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification: it was experimentally proven that the substance was non-flammable on ignition (EU Method A.10). Pyrophoric properties and flammability on contact with water are excluded on the basis of the molecular structure and experience in handling and use. The substance is not self-heating, because it is a solid completely molten at 160 °C.
